Today I’m coming at you with a Top 5 Tuesday post. This weeks prompt is Top 5 Tropes I’ve Had Enough Of which is the opposite of last weeks post, which you can view here. There are some really overused tropes out there, especially in YA. We tend to see the same scenarios occurring and we bore of it and want something new and refreshing. So here are my top 5 that I’m ready to kick to the curb.
If you are not familiar, Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm. She has topics for every week and if you have an idea for a topic, then send your suggestions her way.
1. Love Triangle
Love triangles are the worst! Almost always my ship never sails when it comes to love triangles. Also, I just feel that they are way overused and the protagonist usually chooses the second person to come along. Usually, but not always!
2. Beauty Blind
Ugh. I hate seeing the main protagonist, who is in the midst of a love triangle, but doesn’t know that she’s beautiful. Umm.. hello! You have two guys who are in love with you and you have no idea why? Nope! Tired of it.
3. Hidden Powers
C’mon… Protagonist has a hidden power, throughout the book they train and learn to control their power and then take down the villain in the story. Sound familiar? Yeah, pretty much every YA fantasy book out there.
4. Insta Love
This one is just not realistic to me. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in love at first sight but I don’t think it’s something that is common. And in YA fiction, it is very common.
5. Mean Popular Girl
When I was in middle school, I was the shy quiet girl who was friendly to everyone. The popular girls were also very nice to me. I don’t see why the popular girls in books are always mean and rude. This is common in TV shows and movies as well but I don’t have any experience with it, so it doesn’t seem as realistic.
